Mengal’s release expected today

Mengal’s release expected today
* Former BNP MNA says Sardar Mengal will be given rousing welcome in Karachi, then Balochistan four days laterBy Malik Siraj AkbarQUETTA: It is expected that Sardar Akhtar Mengal, former Balochistan chief minister and Balochistan National Party (BNP) president, will be released in Karachi today (Thursday), BNP sources told Daily Times on Wednesday.Sardar Mengal has been cleared of all criminal charges by the federal and Sindh governments and will be released on Thursday from Liaqat Medical Hospital, Abdul Rauf Mengal, former BNP member of the National Assembly, told Daily Times. Although the Balochistan government recently cleared the BNP president of various charges, he has remained under detention in Karachi on charges of manhandling two Military Intelligence (MI) personnel. “Sardar Mengal will receive a rousing welcome by the Karachi unit of the BNP. He will be taken to his Defence residence soon after his release,” said Rauf. “He will travel to his home province of Balochistan four days later, where he will be given a historic welcome by his followers and admirers,” he added. Not optimistic: However, BNP Secretary General Habib Jalib said he was not very optimistic about the prospects of Sardar Mengal being released today (Thursday). He said that although all cases registered against the BNP president had officially been dismissed, no change had yet registered on the ground. “Despite the issuance of prime ministerial directives, the letter mentioning the withdrawal of cases has not been accepted by the relevant departments in the Sindh government yet. We have not been received word from the Sindh government stating the actual date for Sardar Mengal’s release,” said Jalib. The BNP secretary general said that such bureaucratic red-tape indicated the powerlessness of the civil government, which he said remained “hostage in the hands of the civil and military bureaucracy”.No deal: Jalib said his party’s president was not being released under any covert or overt deal with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). Instead, he argued that Sardar Mengal’s release represented the victory of democracy and the failure of dictatorship – which, he said, had done all it could to undermine the resolve of the Baloch leadership towards attaining their due rights. “The PPP must not remain under illusions that it is doing us a favour by releasing Sardar Mengal. Neither did we beg them for such favours, nor will we ever ask them for favours in the future. All cases against our leader and other workers are false and politically- motivated. The government has not been able to prove a single charge against us,” Jalib added. Asked if his party would participate in a Pakistan Peoples’ Party-sponsored All Parties’ Conference (APC) on Balochistan, the BNP secretary general replied: “Enough confidence-building measures have not yet been taken to convince the Baloch leadership of the government’s sincerity to resolve the Balochistan issue. Sardar Mengal’s release might be a positive development but it is not the sole demand we have been putting in front of the government. The government should withdraw the army from certain parts of the province, end the military operation, release all detained prisoners and address the issue of mega projects. We would also like the complete withdrawal of the Frontier Corps (FC) from all districts of Balochistan, just as it has been withdrawn from Quetta and Gwadar checkposts.” Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani had asked the federal and the provincial governments to immediately withdraw all the cases against Sardar Mengal, who served as the Balochistan chief minister in the late 1990s. In a similar move, Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Muhammad Aslam Raisani also ordered an end to all the cases, including two of sedition, against the BNP chief.
